ast Sunday, rapper Jay Z released a freestyle track titled ‘We Made It’ produced by Jay Electronica. The track addresses various disses and applauds Kenyan actress and Oscar award winner, Lupita Nyong’o.
“I’m on my Lupita Nyong’o, Stuntin’ on stage after ’12 Years A Slave’, this ace of spades look like an Oscar, Black tux, look like a mobster.”
It is worthy to note that the only woman the award-winning Jay Z mentions in his works are his wife, Beyoncé and their daughter, Blue Ivy. The mention of Lupita is one that was greeted by surprise from fans across the world, including Lupita’s home country, Kenya.
Various African personalities and tweets weighed in on the Lupita mention. Fashion designer Kimathi of Jamhuri Wear wrote, “Immortalized in celluloid now in audio by kingHov @S_C_ himself @Lupita_Nyongo stay winning”
Ghanaian rapper, Manifest wrote, “Hey @Lupita_Nyongofirst it was Oprah now you made it chale. Jay Z just majorly name checked you in a song. Winning streak of life.”
Event organiser Buddha Blaze added, “‘I’m on my LupitaNyong’o’ Jay Z gives Lupita street validation ‘We Made It’. …This Kenyan girl world wonder has finally arrived.”
Another tweet, Lilith’s gigolo was of a different idea. He wrote, @Evansmatmoh: “That lupitanyongo mention sounds more of a cuisine.” This was echoed by @MARIEB3791, who wrote, “OMG! The @Lupita_Nyongo shout out is lame but we shouldn’t expect much from Jay Z.”
Reports through the week state that music critics also claim that the ‘Niggas in Paris’ rapper responded to a diss from Drake in the verse saying, “Sorry Mr.Drizzy for so much art talk. Silly me, rappin’ ’bout sh-t that I really bought. While these rappers rap about guns that they ain’t shot. And a bunch of other silly sh-t that they ain’t got.”
This diss is in response to Drake’s interview with Rolling Stone, where Drake spoke on Jay Z’s “art references” terming them as “kind of corny”.
Drake said, “It’s like Hov can’t drop bars these days without at least four art references! I would love to collect at some point, but I think the whole rap/art world thing is getting kind of corny.”
